I have touched on movies with drugs before, but I believe last time was a stoner movie list. Well fuck that today. Let’s look at real movies about real drugs.

Drugstore Cowboy

Matt Dillon showed nothing but promise as a young up and coming actor in this flick. Kelly Lynch wasn’t hard to look at either. Gus Van Sant gave us a real look at what hardcore drug use will do to somebody who may have used to be a decent human being.

Fresh

If you have not seen this movie, then do yourself a favor and find a way to watch it right the fuck now!  Here is the synopsis from IMDb.

“Michael (or Fresh as he’s well known) is a 12-year-old drug pusher who lives in a crowded house with his cousins and aunt. His father has become a street bum,but still meets with fresh on occasion to play chess. Fresh is rather quiet in a crazy world. Fresh’ sister is a junkie who sleeps with the dealers that fresh sells for. As the story progresses Fresh realizes that he doesn’t want to sell drugs anymore, he wants revenge”

This was a great movie and one that can be a little hard to watch at times but is worth every second of time devoted to the screen.

Blow

I used to date a woman who bought coke from the guy this flick is about. It was a hard movie for her as a recovering coke addict to watch. That says a lot for the effort put into it to make the film look legitimate.

A Scanner Darkly

This flick made Keanu Reeves look like a good actor, but how could he not be good with Robert Downey Jr (former addict) and Woody Harrelson (former addict maybe? Current pot smoker.) to work through scenes with. Two guys that are quite talented in their own rights, but are also just damn weird dudes that I am a huge fan of.

Trainspotting

You can’t do a list like this and not include this flick.

Rock N Rolla

Toby Kebbell is brilliant as heroine junkie, Rockstar, Rock n Rolla, Johnny Quid. There is a scene in the flop where that hits you square in the chest. Throw that in with the dialog from behind the piano in the bar and Toby did nothing but make this film better.

Traffic

Had some disturbing scenes showing just what happens to those who get hooked and can’t pay.

I will have you note this post is written without the help of my favorite ranking website Flickchart because there is no category for drug movies. However the idea for this post is brought to you by the Lords of Acid and their song that is the title for this post.

The problem with doing a good or even great movie on the subject of hardcore drug use is that you have to go dark. You have to get and R rating and you have to do it cheap because as good or even great as some of these films are, they are not box office gold which is why you don’t see the studios pumping them out. That is why you don’t see a category for these films either. Now go watch some movies and let me know how they are.
