I have found that "fantasy" films have somewhat fallen out of fashion over the past decade and a half. Fantasy in respect to as you mentioned Willow, even films like Eric the Viking, although I recognise that Lord of the Rings was an exception (Not to sure about Dungeons & Dragons because I haven't seen it). Oh and Shrek. I guess Brothers Grimm also is a contemporary fantasy and Narnia (Although I found that in comparison to the television series, very poor form).

I quite like the archetypal fantasy genre with warlocks and various creatures, probably a bit more then archetypal sci-fi (I'm a big fan of psychological science fiction like Cold Lazarus by Dennis Potter, Brazil, A Clockwork Orange (?), Sleeper, 1984 etc). I guess with sci-fi mostly it is about a "better" world or future or parallel projection of our own which is as you say speculative whereas fantasy we understand to not be probable but it plays into our longing to enrich our current world with the existence of fairies and goblins etc (Some classic horror plays into this as well, werewolves and vampires).

Most of my students love sci-fi, indeed it is difficult to get them to get enthusiastic about anything else, I don't know why this is, perhaps based on wanting "something else" from the difficulties and banality of everyday life. I don't really know. I don't much get into laser tag sci-fi only because most contemporary examples seem to be mere soap-operas in space.
