When I am not watching movies
Rants and Ramblings, The Whore's Lists November 10th, 2008
As much as I love movies I love my TV shows as well. Here is a little bit of what I watch through the week when taking a break from film.
Sons of Anarchy
Hands down the best new show on TV. FX got one right and did it in a big way. Some will say it nothing but The Sopranos as bikers and to that I say, “So what?”
This show is still damn good. I will always remember Kate Sagal as Peg Bundy but in SOA she is damn good as a biker wife. Her old man runs the SOA and her son is next in line to take over the club.
One of my favorite characters in this show is Tigger. He is insane and they really do a great job of showing just how crazy he is. So far my favorite Tigger line is “That’s why I beat hookers.”
Is wrong, oh hell yes. but when you hear it in the context of the situation it is damn funny.
House
My favorite self centered mad genius. The writing for this show has been consistently outstanding from the first episode until know. House is one of those shows that gives you a medical mystery where some ones life hangs in the balance but you still get to laugh.
The cast has changed some what but it has done nothing to detract from the show and in ways it has gotten better as they have gone on. I attribute this to 2 things. The writing has remained incredibly strong and the cast has delivered at every turn. This is the right to put together a TV show.
Big Bang Theory
Easily the smartest show on TV. I can see where the humor is lost on some with this show as they really do go for the hardcore nerd/geek audience. To get an Idea of what that audience looks like check out this piece written by Jack Gamble over at Babeled.
This show never ceases to crack me up. We are watching 4 guys whose combined IQ’s are higher than probably any 20 people that you work with and they make it work with great writing and a a great cast that knows how to deliver.
Two and a Half Men
There really are times I have to wonder how much of this show is autobiographical for Charlie Sheen. After several years the show has remained one of the funniest thing I have ever seen. It has been a long time since I saw show that makes me laugh as much as this one even when watching re-runs in syndication.
Boston Legal
Hands down the most brilliant pairing of actors ever. The Shatman and James Spader have some of the best chemistry I have ever seen. Add in the rest of the all star cast including the great John Laroquette, Candace Bergen and the occasional appearance of Rene Auberjonois who I first saw many moons ago as Clayton on the show Benson.
I am still looking for a ring tone for my phone that is Shatner saying “Denny Crane” and if you know where I can find it let me know.
South Park
Hands down the single best social commentary I have ever seen. As I have been watching this latest season unfold I really feel as though they are trying to see if they can get the FCC to make Comedy Central pull the show.
The Simpson’s
Have been on TV for over half my life and there is a damn good reason for it. They keep producing some of the best TV we have ever seen.
Family Guy/American Dad
There have been moments where I have sworn that Seth Green has a running a bet with Matt and Trey to see who can get the biggest fine form the FCC and or who can get canceled first.
True Blood
One of the best new shows this year. Ana Paquin is the only one I recognize but this cast delivers. The show is based on books written by Charlaine Harris. It is all about Vampires as they have some out of hiding and are trying to coexist with humans. There is a little bit of everything in here. I have been impressed with the show and it keeps getting better.
One drawback however. It is on HBO which means a 12 episode season and who knows how long before we get a new season. I remember the torture of waiting to see when we were going to get new Sopranos and I know It will be the same here. However the show is good enough for me to put up with it.
___________________________________________________________________________
Now set up your DVR to record and watch these shows and I guarantee you will not be disappointed. I do want mention one last show.
This one is not typical viewing for me as I hate reality TV but Gene Simmons Family Jewels is worth the watch. I love watching the God of Thunder get the hammer dropped in him by his entire family. It is the only reality show I have been able to watch and still look at my self in the mirror afterwards. The show is on hiatus right now but is A&E and one to look forward to if they bring it back for a 3rd season.
Have a great Monday kids.

With the exception of Sons of Anarchy and the animated shows, I watch all these shows too. I love True Blood. The addition of Zeljko Ivanek as the Judge last night was fantastic. I’m not sure where they’re planning to go with the stories, but they’ve added all kinds of mystery and suspense mixed with folklore, myths and magic.

I have read the books that the show is based on so I have some idea. The thing is with the books is that they are mostly told from Sookie’s perspective so they have been able to add quite a bit into the show and have done a marvelous job. I would give SOA a look it is pretty damn good.

House is the only network TV show that I actually enjoy watching. I’m with you 100% on that one. South Park is also great, but I seem to keep missing every episode this season. Goddamnit!
Other than that when I find time to watch mindless television I usually end up watching reruns of Seinfeld. Although I did catch one episode of Two and A Half Men – and it was pretty good.

Date: “Like what?”
Sheen: “Well for instance now the girl pays and sex is guaranteed on the first date”
