Make part of a movie
Rants and Ramblings September 9th, 2008Yes you read that right.
Imagine you go to a site, maybe like this one. You watch this clip that is only the first chapter of the flick. Then you click for the next chapter. Wait a minute those are not the same actors. Is it a remake?
You keep watching and you realize it is a continuation of the the story. You click the next chapter. Different actors again but the story still fits with the other 2 clips.
What the hell is going on?
Welcome to Root Clip. Here is an explanation from the sites About page.
Rootclip.com was created to give filmmakers, writers, actors and anybody who just likes to watch movies the ability to collaborate on a video project. Our goal is to be the catalyst that gets people thinking and being creative with video in such a way that it infects the masses and brings a new life to the art of filmmaking. Get creative and show us what you’ve got!
How the hell did this get started you ask.
The idea of Rootclip began in a hospital room of all places. Kevin and Erik had been spending many nights with a family member in the hospital. In passing the long hours through conversation, Kevin and Erik both remembered how they enjoyed choose-your-own adventure books when they were kids. That turned into an “it would be cool if (insert anything here)…was a website” type of conversation, which led to the initial idea that is now Rootclip. Originally, the guys thought that their site was going to be like ’24′, but using minutes instead of hours and doing everything in real-time. They quickly decided that would take a LONG time to finish a story and there could be times (like 3:42am) that aren’t going to be very interesting for the viewer. Then they thought to do a very localized storyline that would incorporate landmarks as central pieces of the story, but thought that would really limit them to the city they live in for an audience. So after some advising and revising, the idea is what you see today.
Here is how it works.
The guys at Root Clip come up with a concept for a story and shoot the first chapter. You go watch it. You go make a short for the next chapter and submit it to Root Clip and people start voting. The Judge’s Panel takes a look and votes as well. The clip with the highest percentage of combined votes gets added to the story and we repeat the process until we reach the final chapter (No not Friday the 13th Part 4).
If your clip is chosen to add to the story here is what you could win.
First Prize – Chapters 2-5
* $250 Visa Gift Card.
* Balance Beam from Trig Industries.
* The DV Rebel’s Guide by Stu Maschwitz.
* Video for the Web training DVD, by VASST.
Grand Prize – Chapter 6
* $2,000 Visa Gift Card.
Not bad for making a clip less than 2 minutes long. To be honest I know some people I am going to try to talk into doing this. I think it will be a lot of fun. I have already been having fun watching these clips.
I definitely recommend checking it out and even if you don’t make a clip or 2 you can always watch the clips, register on the site and then vote for your favorite.
Either way you are guaranteed to have some fun. So head on over to Root Clip and let the games begin.
