In Bruges, as disturbing as it is funny
Reviews August 18th, 2008A buddy of mine turned me on to this flick. In Bruges stars Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleason as a couple of hit men sent to Bruges, Belgium after a hit went wrong to lay low.
Ray (Farrell) is a young guy who hates that he has been sent to this small town that is something out of a fairy tale and Ken (Gleason) is his mentor who loves being in this little town that is rich with history. The chemistry between the 2 creates some of the funniest scenes I have seen in a while. Ray comes across as almost shild like. He is impatient and wants to have fun which for Ray includes hitting the pub and watching a film crew that is filming a a dream sequence. There is a flick I saw several years ago where in the film they were filming a dream sequence that had a dwarf in it. The dwarf stops at the end of the scene and goes off on how you can always tell it is a weird dream sequence because there is a dwarf in it. Knowing this made the the whole thing that much funnier for me.
Ray is obsessed with the dwarf and this little piece of trivia that he knows about dwarfs, they have a higher suicide rate.
After a couple days in Bruges Ken gets a call form their boss Harry and Harry terlls Ken he is to kill Ray. When I said this movie is as disturbing as it is brutal I have to say when they show the hit gone wrong it was a punch in the chest. You see Ray accidentally killed a kid and has been sent to Bruges to because Harry loved it as a kid and thought of it as a fairy tale town that would give Ray happy time before he is dispatched. I felt I had to tell you about that and I wish my buddy had tole me. I was totally unprepared for the scene and it did have quite the effect.
Part of what made this film brilliant for me is that are able to to hit between the eyes with scenes like this and then have you rolling on the ground laughing.
Now I have never been much of a Colin Farrell fan but in this movie he was absolutely brilliant. Normally when he goes into a film he has to concentrate on not having an accent. In this he was able to use his normal accent and was allowed to focus on his character and it showed.
Brendan Gleason has been in quite a few films and has always been a wonderful character actor and a joy to watch. He is just as enjoyable here.
I highly recommend going out and renting this film today. It carries The Movie Whore Satisfaction Guaranteed Seal of Approval.
