DC Comics and the movies
Rants and Ramblings, Reviews August 13th, 2008Now there is a lot less to cover and with DC. There has not been nearly the number of characters brought to the big screen from the DC world as the Marvel world. Now I have always been a Marvel guy so I don’t know the books but I know what I like. So let’s take a look and see what we find.
Superman 1-4
The first Superman gave us a hero for the ages. It was really the first comic to screen adaptation that worked. I first saw it as a kid and I wanted to be Superman. As I got older I would periodically go back and revisit this film. Every time I would ask the same question.
“Isn’t Lois supposed to be a hot chick?”
Oh well. Some like Margot but I am not one of them. What did impress me was what Christopher Reeve did to his body to prepare for this role to ensure he would not have to wear a muscle suit.
Gene Hackman is one of the all time great actors along with his sidekick Ned Beaty made a villainous duo that was also fun to watch.
“Miss Teschmacher!”
Then we moved on to Superman 2 and Zod.
“God help us.”
“No, Zod.”
It was campy, it was cheesy, it was still the man in the cape. Only now he falls in love and then gives up his powers and then get them back and take their powers away. Hmm…sorry not buying it. Loved as a kid but the older I got the less appeal this movie had.
Then we throw in Richard Prior as an computer genius who does not know he is a computer genius and Robert Vaughn as money grubbing power hungry villain that finances a computer that will help rule the world and kill Superman after a failed attempt at making Krytonite that turns our favorite son of Krypton into an asshole. Run on sentence yes but if you heard this description would you have seen this movie?
Then there is the wondrous Quest for Peace in which the man of steel tells the leaders of the world they can’t have their nukes any more. Hmm…not buying it. Throw in John Cryer as the annoying nephew of Lex Luthor and this movie just kept getting worse.
Superman Returns
Let’s start with one of my favorite quotes from Mallrats.
“It’s impossible, Lois could never have Superman’s baby. Do you think her Fallopian tubes could handle the sperm? I guarantee you he blows a load like a shotgun right through her back. What about her womb? Do you think it’s strong enough to carry his child?”
“Sure, why not?”
“He’s an alien, for Christ sake. His Kyrptonian biological makeup is enhanced by earth’s yellow sun. If Lois gets a tan the kid could kick right through her stomach. Only someone like Wonder Woman has a strong enough uterus to carry his kid. The only way he could bang regular chicks is with a kryptonite condom. That would kill him.”
Strangely enough this conversation makes a lot of sense and Kevin Smith knows his shit when it comes to comics. Bryan Singer however does not.
I was actually enjoying this long drawn out movie up until that point. I was also bored to death with he love story.
What I did like was Kevin F*cking Spacey as Lex Luthor. Perfection.
What freaked me out was Brandon Routh. I swear when I closed my eyes all I could hear was the voice of the dearly departed Christopher Reeve. It sent chills up my spine how much this guy looks and sounds like Reeve. It was down right eerie. The kid did an incredible job and if you make another one he has got be the man in the cape, no questions asked.
I actually enjoyed everything about this movie that had nothing to do with the love story between Lois and Clark. I could have done with out it completely and it made the movie longer than it needed to be.
So I guess the only success with this franchise has been the first but the last shows promise that maybe they will get it right again some day.
Supergirl
WTF? Do I really need to even say anything. I hope not. It sucked. Normally I would go on and on about how it sucked but I even thought it was bad when I was a kid and have not seen it since. Who knows maybe I should give it another try. What to do you think?
Well that’s it for today, tune in tomorrow when I hit up a franchise that has created 7 films and maybe only 3 of them are worth watching. Well maybe now 3 but it used to be a slightly different 3.
