CGI Classics
The Whore's Lists August 20th, 2008Ok if you read Rotten Tomatoes you saw their miserable excuse for a list. They have really been doing a shitty job as of late with their lists. It really makes me wonder if they even watch movies. Below would be some of my picks for the what I would call a CGI classic including those that revolutionized the way CGI is used.
TRON
Why would this flick not be at the top of the list. It was the first extensive use of 3D CGI. Not only that it was cool as hell to watch those light cycles.
The Last Fighter
The Gunstar flew and reacted as if it was real obeying the laws of physics. That and it was the first film to use CGI effects to represent real world objects. Not to mention it was a fun flick and one of my all time favorites.
WIllow
Was the first movie to use CGI as a morphing effect that was close to photo realistic in a feature film . Again a great movie and one I am proud to own.
The Abyss
The water tentacle was unlike anything I had ever seen before. It was the coolest thing I had ever seen at that point in my life. I may not have remembered much from that flick the first time I saw it but I never forgot that water tentacle.
T2: Judgement Day
Taking the water tentacle to whole new level. The T1000 was awesome. Not quite old enough to be a classic but it is on the rim.
Young Sherlock Holmes
I realize most of just said WTF but the the stain glass knight was a first in in CGI use. I have not seen this flick in quite a few years but I remember loving it as a kid.
Labyrinth
Is a classic flick all by itself but it was also the first flick to use a CGI animal.
I said classics. So while The Matrix and and the Lord of the Rings flicks will make this list in the future they just are not old enough to really be considered classic films. There are several other films that I could list through her.
Other honorable mentions include Toy Story, King Kong, Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within, Polar Express, Beowulf and a few others. Have a good one.

Wasn’t the Last Starfighter the first CG sequences or something?

Tron was the first one to use it for a sustained scene with the Light cycles but Last Starfighter is often referred to the first film to use CGI extensively.
