Why Star Trek is better than Star Wars
Rants and Ramblings June 18th, 2008One thing I think I have found that can whip people into a frenzy just as bad as religion or politics is some of our beloved franchises, villains, heroes and other categories we will find below, especially when you say one is better than the other. So let’s see what kind of damage we do.
Let’s start small. and move into the big stuff a little later.
Cross Country Race Movies: Gumball Rally, Cannonball Run
Better Movie:Cannonball Run
Why: 2 words, Captain Chaos. Now Gumball had it’s moments. Who can forget the guy on motorcycle who went through nothing but hell through out the movie. However Captain Chaos trumps all. Not to mention you had an all star cast and the out takes were some of the funniest stuff around at the time.
Out takes during the credits: Cannonball Run movies, Jackie Chan Movies
Better Out takes: Cannonball Run
Why: 2 words. Face slap. I never get tired of watching Burt slap Dom over and over again. Say what will but I love those out take reels and they make the the Cannonball movies 2 of my favorites that I will always love.
Horror Villains: Freddy Krueger, Jason Voohrees
Better Villain: Jaosn Vohrees
Why: I hear the groans already and the resounding “WTF?” Really my basis for this is that Jason had the best kill ever. I am of course referring to the holodeck kills in Jason X. How can you not gie it to him after watching him beat a girl in a sleeping bag using another girl in a sleeping bag. I couldn’t help but to laugh. You do have to admit it is one of the more original kills.
Batman: Michael Keaton, Christian Bale
Better Batman: Christian Bale
Why: This was a tough one for me. I have been a Keaton fan since I was a kid and I saw Mr. Mom. That and when you need a angry to fill a part you go get Michael Keaton. However I think Bale had the better script and director to work with. That and Bale is an incredible actor that can pull off any part. If you doubt his abilities to play a mad man driven by inner demons then watch American Psycho again.
Horror Movie Heroes: Ash, Elvis
Better Hero: Both
Why: Like there is even a question here. Besides you had to know I would find a way to work Bruce into this list. Ash is is one of a kind. How many heroes can pull off the double barrel shotgun and chain saw look and then turn around and play The King taking on a mummy with a black JFK played by Ossie Davis.
James Bond: Sean Connery, Roger Moore
Better Bond: As if I need to tell you.
Why: Hell I would sleep with Sean Connery. No one can deny that he is the master of playing 007. No one had the combination of sarcasm, intelligence and downright ability to kick ass like Connery as Bond. Throw in the fact he could indeed have damn near any woman on the planet and a few straight men and he is not only the original but the best James Bond ever.
Punisher: Dolph Lundren, Thomas Jane
Better Frank Castle: Dolph Lundren
Why: Yeah so the movie sucked. If you look at the Castle character Dolph’s version was closer to the comic that Thomas Jane could get. Don’t get me wrong I like Jane as an actor but he just does not have the dark side needed to play The Punisher. Dolph was dark and foreboding. He had no redeemable qualities. He was a stone cold killer that would have told the neighbors to f*ck off.
Dune: Original version, Scifi Channel version
Better Version: Original all the way
Why: Frank Herbert himself signed off on this flick and even originally did the narration instead of Virginia Madsen. I love this movie. It truly is one of my favorites. I tried to sit through the new and I just could not do it. As a matter of fact I would describe the event as painful.
Now for the grandaddy of them of all
Scifi Franchise: Star Trek, Star Wars
Better Franchise: You decide
Why: I may be a glutton for punishment but this goes beyond the call of duty. The way I see it each has it’s advantages and each has it’s drawbacks so I am leaving it up to you to tell me and everyone else which is better.
Have fun with this one kids. Oh and thanks Rodney for the idea.

Star Trek is better then Star Wars. Why? Because it was a TV show and could try so many different things. Yeah, Star Wars is a supremely awesome series of films (based on NEVER watching episode 1…), but the offshoot shows of ST just worked for me.
Cannonball Run was a fantastic film in the film itself and the outtakes. The outtakes were much funnier then the film though.
Sys last blog post..Yes, I get that it is for charity, but you are still a fat git.
