The Queen of the Geeks on Sci-Fi
Lists, Rants and Ramblings June 3rd, 2008First off, I would like to make it clear that I realize this list is incomplete. I know I have seen more science fiction then the list here but I can’t re-call it all, or I remember the title but it has been so long since I’ve last seen it, I can’t remember the details enough to include them here. This may need to be a topic I re-visit later.
I can’t just give you a list of my top ten. If you notice my title, then you should realize this means I’m a huge fan of science fiction and it’s too hard for me to settle on just ten titles. So I’m going to break it down into categories.
The first is just good ol’ science fiction gravy that should be on everyone’s shelf.
The second list are sci-fi movies that entertained me for reasons that may have nothing to do with the “science” involved, so much as the cheesy writing or what not, movies that may only seem “good” to me…or the Movie Whore.
The third is the list of movies I feel stand out far and above the usual standards of the common sci-fi movie.
These are the movies every one should own, or at least see once. There are several more, but again, I can’t re-call each movie I’ve ever seen in my life.
Outland: Sean Connory in space. It’s awesome classic sci-fi goodness.
2001:A Space Odyssey: To be honest, this movie took me a few years to get through. It’s one where your mind must be sophisticated enough to handle it. As a kid, I saw it as a very slow moving and painful experience, but as I started studying classical music and getting to know Arthur C. Clark as an author, I found that this movie was beautifully orchestrated. I do have to say though, the book makes more sense scene for scene. If you’ve already read the book, then the movie is a real delight.
The original Star Wars trilogy: Even before they came back in and “improved” it. As a kid, these movies seriously shaped my path to the geek side. I can still watch them any time they are on the screen. I just can’t help it.
On that same note, the Star Trek movies: Now sadly to say, the last one I saw was “Generations” and it didn’t make me very happy. I was a fan of “The Next Generation” series so I have interest in watching the rest of them, I just haven’t gotten around to it…and I realize that is not very geeky of me. I need to rectify this immediately. Anyways, the first six movies are fun and worth owning and rewatching.
Planet of the Apes: Classic. Must see it…the old ones, the original ones.
Cocoon: This is one of those movies that as a kid, I was not entertained, but as I got older I found this movie…endearing. I like the idea of seniors partying with the aliens.
The Day the Earth Stood Still: This is what good old sci-fi is really about. It’s an awesome reflection of how people saw science fiction at that time.
Gattaca: Love this movie. Love those scary possible future type story lines with sci-fi. Talented cast, excellent writing and it’s pretty on the eyes. It was a very solid story.
Stargate: This was a fun movie. What I love about this movie is I enjoy it just the same every time I watch it. It was good enough to spin a very entertaining t.v. show. This will go down as classic sci-fi through out time.
Tron: This movie was revolutionary for the technology of the time it was filmed. I love that I can watch it today and I’m totally entertained by it even with computers being what they are today. So much fun.
O.k. now this next category of movies are technically science fiction, but what entertains me about them may be that they are a comedy, or it entertained my childhood’s mind. They may be terrible science fiction examples, they might even be bad movies, but I like them and they’re on my sci-fi list.
Ice Pirates: I love this movie. I laugh my ass off every time I watch this movie. It is beyond cheese. Space Herpes. That is all I should have to say.
Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure: This is seriously my boyfriend’s favorite movie…but my boyfriend is the Movie Whore, so there you go, but I’m o.k. with that. I love this movie. It’s the one movie I’ve really enjoyed Keanu Reeve’s performance as this role seems very realistic for him. That and it has George Carlin, I’m a huge fan of anything that has George Carlin in it. Rock on Wyld Stallyns.
Earth Girls Are Easy: This is not an example of a good sci-film, heck, this isn’t an example of a good movie, but it makes me laugh and that’s all that matters. Not to mention it has Jim Carrey in the beginning of his career and it even has a show tune or two. Serious Cheese.
Space Balls: O.k. I love this movie. I could watch this movie everyday of my life and I would be entertained every time, but then again, I am that way with all Mel Brooks’ films.
The Fifth Element: This movie is cheesy but it has a cute message and a lot of humor…and it looks really cool.
Flash Gordon: You do not have to be a Queen fan to like this movie…but it helps. In fact, I’m such a geek, I have the soundtrack to this movie on my iPod along with everything else Queen has ever done. Queen is not the only cool part of this movie. It’s classic cheese and it was done before everyone else had jumped on the comic book to movie band wagon. Very fun sci-fi fantasy story.
Galaxy Quest: This movie is funny and everyone should see it. Stellar cast, excellent writing and laugh out loud antics.
Men in Black: And this includes the second one as well. They did a good job with these. I’m not familiar with the comic books these came from, so I don’t know how well they did in representing that, but Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones made a great team…and Rip Torn, come on, Rip Torn is funny.
Tank Girl: Not a good movie, won’t pretend it is, but I love it. Lori Petty is hot and strong and half men-half kangaroos is just a classic good time.
Tremors: This movie is so much fun. First time you watch it, you’re on the edge of your seat. The next hundred times you can just laugh your ass off. I didn’t bother with the rest of them though so I have no idea how the series stands up.
Flight of the Navigator: Now I’m not actually as entertained by this movie now, but when I was a kid I couldn’t get enough of it and I watched it all the time. It was really well done, I just believe I burnt myself out on it.
O.k. Now for the ultimate list. These are movies that are not just good or even great…or even awesome science fiction, these are some of my favorite movies regardless of genre.
Alien and Aliens: The first movie is one of the best translation from book to movie I have ever witnessed. It was beautifully done and still to this day scares me to the core… like I can’t watch it unless there are lights and other people. The second one is scary too. I don’t hate the other ones, I just don’t think they quite stand up to the first two.
Blade Runner: So freaking good. Wonderful story of artificial intelligence and the men who made them. I’m not just a fan because I love Harrison Ford. This is epically good, but I suggest the director’s cut on this one, makes way more sense and is artfully more intense.
The Abyss: This became one of my favorite movies the very first time I saw it and stands up every other time I’ve ever seen it, and again, I recommend the director’s cut.
Closer Encounters of the Third Kind: Another one of those movies that really reflect what the thoughts of the time were as far as meeting up with aliens. Very talented cast and orchestrated perfectly.
Dark City: This movie is so much fun. I watched this movie the first time and immediately watched it again. Very complete movie.
Enemy Mine: I love showing this movie to a kid for the first time. Every kid should see this movie. I was a kid when I saw it and it changed my life. It still makes my cry to this day. I usually do not require such emotions with my science fiction but this story is amazing.
The Last Star Fighter: Another one of those movies that was ahead of it’s time when it came to the technology used. What kid didn’t want their video game to turn into the real deal. This movie is so much fun and it’s a classic you can watch with your entire family.
Logan’s Run: This movie should be shown in school. It’s an eye opener. Gets the brain really thinking. Classic that should be on everyone’s shelf.
Terminator: I’m just talking the first one here, though I did like the second one and I can’t judge the third one as I haven’t seen it yet, need to get to it one of these days. The first one is classic good sci-fi and as a Californian, it’s funny to see our governor being the ultimate nightmare. So well done and it represents the genre so well.
Total Recall: While we’re on the subject of our governor, we might as well throw this one in too. What I love about this movie is every time I see it, I see it differently as far as what I believe is the illusion versus the reality and I love that it does that to me.
Serenity: O.k. now given, this movie is on here because I am a total “Firefly” freak, but I find it stands alone as an awesome sci-fi story even without the background story of the show…but everyone should go out and buy the show if they haven’t already anyways.
A few more movies that didn’t fit in any of these categories but I wanted to include anyways would be the following.
Akira: In fact, I just re-watched this recently. Another one of those that really gets your brain going and the animation is excellent for the time.
Ghost in the Shell: Another one that has just amazing animation and is a great story of where artificial intelligence fits in our society. Makes me think of Heinlein’s novel “Friday”.
Transformers: I have a feeling that this movie will eventually end up in my first category, but it hasn’t been around long enough for me to see if my feelings for it stick around, but as a person who enjoyed the toy and the cartoon when I was a child, it was done with justice.
So that’s my tentative sci-fi movie favorites list. Just be glad the topic is movies, because if it was science fiction books, I would be writing my own book. What can I say, I’m the Queen of the Geeks. It’s what I do. May the force be with you and live long and prosper. Shiny.

Good lord! A grown man afraid to watch Aliens by himself! I didn’t believe it until….
I read you owned Xanadu. Now I believe it.
You’re quite right 3 & 4 don’t compare to 1 & 2 which are far superior. Aliens (2) is my favourite though..just a bit more pacey. I love Star Wars too.. I’ve seen them sooo many times it’s untrue. Just love all that escapism. BTW you seem to be missing Predator..or doesn’t that classify as Sci Fi? Predator always has me sitting on the edge of my seat (pretty difficult I can tell you) but Predator 2 is utter pants.

I did not include Predator as I have not watched them since I was very young and cannot remember them and I only included movies that are my favorites. I will be re watching the predator movies here soon so they will probably be on the list the next round.

This particular post was written by my girlfriend. Not me. Hence The Queen of he Geeks on Scifi vs The Movie Whore.
I love Predator. As a matter of fact The Queen picked up an Alien Predator pack that has both movies and one that was Aliens/Predator 2

Earth Girls are Easy. What a great film! OK, so that comment is based upon the fact that at the time it came out, I had the serious hots for Geena Davis. And she had a bikini on. And I had hormones. I almost went blind…if you know what I mean.
Sys last blog post..Sha-wiiiiing.

Sy you would go for that. She is one of those women that either looks incredibly hot or incredibly not. No in between. I still love Long Kiss Goodnight.
The Movie Whores last blog post..The Queen of the Geeks on Sci-Fi

Ah yes. The Long Kiss Goodnight. Had I been a teenager when that came out, I would have probably had a heart attack…or one hell of a bicep!
Sys last blog post..The question is, would you be interested?
