The Movie Whore on The Matrix Trilogy
Rants and Ramblings, Reviews June 13th, 2008Mythology is fun. The Wachowski brothers did a masterful job in creating a new mythology for the masses to enjoy. There is a lot of conjecture that goes with these films and many opinions and ideas. If you think about it when a film inspires the lengthy conversations and debates that this trilogy does then you can not deny it has earned a place among the great Scifi franchises of the past. Time to get on with the closer look.
The Matrix: I remember going opening night to see this flick not even realizing it was opening night. I did not know too much about the flick as I really did not have much Internet access and spent most of my time watching movies and trying to learn how to play guitar (failed miserably) so when I sat down and watched this movie I was completely blown away.
I had never seen anything like it and neither had the rest of us. It was movie that took us to a place we had never envisioned. It was original.
They took us down the rabbit hole and I really don’t think we were prepared for what we were about to discover.
OK get over the fact that it is Keanu Reeves. I actually liked him in this. It worked for me. I loved the Neo character.
Really who would not want to be able to just jack in and learn how to do anything in seconds. Sure you look goofy with the data port in the back of the head but I think the benefits make up for it.
Moss looked outstanding in head to toe leather. Yummy.
We also got a new villain to add to the all time great list. Hugo Weaving as Agent Smith made the movie just as much as anything else.
How many movies copied the bullet effect that the Wachowskis created?
When you throw it all together this movie was a breath of fresh air and gave rabid Scifi fans something new to sink their teeth into. Awesome flick.
Reloaded and Revolutions: To me this was not 2 movies but one long one. The stage was perfectly set with first flick and now we see how the story progresses and eventually ends.
In the first film we see a fledgling Neo come to realize what he can do inside the Matrix. In these last 2 films we see Neo kick ass against everything, repeatedly.
While all the action was done incredibly well there are 3 scenes that always stuck out in my mind.
First we have one the greatest car chases I have ever scene. The stuff they threw in there had you going “Oh Damn!” or “Holy Shit!” or “That was awesome!” and that was in the middle of the theater yelling it out loud or I am just that guy?
Second we have the really real world invasion of Zion. For defense Zion pulls out these bad ass looking mechs with super machine gun cannons blasting sqiddies and inevitably getting over run. I love mechs and anytime I get to see mechs in action I am a happy whore.
Third is of course the final Neo Agent Smith showdown with the hundreds of Agent Smiths. Visually one of the greatest scenes I have ever seen. The Wachowskis promised something that would be difficult to duplicate and then they delivered.
Now for the simple version of the story.
Basically Neo was originally engineered to be able to do what he does for a purpose. It is a cycle laid out by the machines to keep the humans interested in the Matrix. Every so often the humans need to have people wake up from the cyber dream and join the really real world (yes I know but I just love using it.) Everything that has taken place is by design. Only this time their human savior has infused one of their Agents with some of his own power. This complicates things and gives Neo a bargaining chip to try and end the cycle. He plays it and it works.
That is the simple version and I am looking forward to delving deeper with you through comments. Really there is more to this story and I could write 5 times as much about the theories we have all bantered back and forth with friends.
That wraps up Scifi week and next week well, we will see what The Movie Whore can come up with. Have a great weekend kids.

Given the current energy situation, we might turn to our own bodies for generating electricity and heat, especially if all was nuked in war. Then artificial intelligence (which is currently at the intelligence level of 14 year old’s mind) will realize that the best way to power itself is to use such energy. Given current virtual reality worlds like SecondLife, which consume people from their promary lives, it all might snap together as forseen by the Wachowski siblings.
Is it that hard to believe?

No it’s not that hard to believe.
Especially when you look at the AI that EA Sports is putting into Madden 09 that learns the way you play and adjusts itself accordingly to make the game harder.

Yeah that always bugged me out. In flying games, when jets regroup and plot strategy against you after you shoot one down, it feels a little strange. Sometimes I look at the PS3 like the monkeys looked at the square stone in 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968).
