The Movie Whore on Scifi
The Whore's Lists June 2nd, 2008I have always been a huge Scifi fan. Ever since I was a kid. There are 2 kinds of Scifi.
1. Blowing shit up in space or travel back in time.
2. Movies that make you think.
Based on these 2 things I have a list of some my favorite Scifi films.
The Philadelphia Experiment: I don’t know if this historical event was ever actually explained but this film gives you a good look at what might happened. I saw as a kid and loved. I haven’t seen it in 20 years or so and I am not sure about the re-watch value now but It does leave me with some fond childhood memories.
Dune: The original. I still watch this one from time to time and enjoy it every time. There is just something about this flick that I never get tired of. Of course there is always the same question every time I watch it. Did Patrick Stewart ever have hair?
Dark City: Damn I love Jennifer Connelly. The flick was good too. This is one of my all time favorite Scifi flicks. I loved the whole idea of memory switching and the question if a killer would continue to kill if given the memories of a cop and vice versa. Makes for some very interesting debate.
Donnie Darko: This flick takes a lot of shit. I loved this flick and got it the first time I watched it. I knew what was coming long before the end but enjoyed the ride getting there.
Starship Troopers: Did some one say death and mayhem? This movie has a lot of glorious violence and incredibly bad acting. Where else will NPH read your mind and Clancy Brown will stick Jake Busey’s hand with a knife.
Ghost in the Shell: I don’t care if it is Anime it still fits. I was thinking about this movie for hours after I watched it. One my favorites to this day.
The Time Machine: No no the new one. I am talking about the original. It’s a great story and I fell in love with as a kid on a Saturday afternoon and I have watched it too many times not to love it.
Battle beyond the Stars: This may not be worth watching as an adult but as a kid it had spaceships and they blew shit up so I was all over it. I would love to get my hands on a copy of this flick just to see how it holds up.
Star Wars most of them: I will always love this franchise and I never get tired of watching episodes 4-6. I can even watch episode 3 again. I have a little trouble with 2 and I can not watch 1 ever again.
Star Trek most of them: 5 was not their best work. Generations pissed me off. They killed my childhood hero not once but twice in the same movie. Other than that if one of these flicks is on I don’t care how much I have missed I am dialed in until the end.
This is 10 of many. Let me know what the ones I am missing and I bet I just didn’t think of it at the time. Also be sure to check out the list The Queen of the Geeks is putting together.

A very solid list, and it is nice to see anime getting some love. Not enough people take anime in general seriously and there have been some excellent anime movies and tv shows.
Donnie Darko was great, but I enjoyed the original better than the director’s cut.

Anime always gets forgotten. I have been a bug fan for years. One of the reasons I am so upset about a live action Akira movie.

The jump from anime to live action is completely unnecessary and it is an insult to the carefully crafted style altogether. Critics need to recognize anime for what it is and that is a legitimate genre of visual media.
