Off the beaten path
Rants and Ramblings June 20th, 2008The Movie Whore wonders off the the beaten path frequently to find those movies you never hear about. So where is it I look to find all that bad cinema?
Video Store/Online Rentals
There was a time when I would walk into the video store on Monday and wander around for 2-3 hours looking for something I had never seen that might be worth the watch. I spent most of that reading back covers and seeing who was in it who wrote it and running it through my mind to see if I could piece anything together. I would end up grabbing 8-10 movies and then would spend my week after work watching movies. As soon as I finished up I would be back at the store renting another 8-10.
Then came online rentals. I could load up as many movies as I wanted and as soon I was done with one I could trade it for another. I liked using the Blockbuster program because I could take that online rental and trade it in in the store for something while I waited for my next mailer. This took me down to only 6 movies a week.
Cable TV of old
This goes back to my childhood spending the weekends watching any movie I could find. Back then we did not have the the numerous channel options we have now. I remember in my teen years it was all about TBS. Back in those days that meant watching Beastmatser at least once every other weekend.
This also led to me watching old movies with mom. I have seen more Gene Kelly and Fred Astaire than I can remember and I have seen every Gidget movie ever made. Remember I said I was watching with my mom.
Premium Cable of old
HBO, Showtime, Cinemax. HBO is where I discovered Killer Klowns from Outer Space as well as many others. I remember way back when HBO was advertising their new movie channel Cinemax. Cinemax AKA Skinemax. This was where the teen hormones kicked into overdrive. It was all about having that friend that had Cinemax and crashing at his palce so we could sit up and see naked women on TV. Teenage boys, what are going to do?
Cable Today
Now there is so many places on TV to find B-Movies that I am a happy whore anytime I turn on the tube. One of my favorite places to find something to watch is On Demand free movies. This is how I discovered Six String Samurai, My Big Fat Independent Movie, Brother from another Planet and others. Some of the Premium channels have gone On Demand as well.
Scifi Channel is the the new undisputed king of B-Movies. As I am writing this I am watching Route 666 with Lou Diamnond Phillips and Lori Petty. It’s no too bad so far and it’s fathers day so I get to watch whatever I want today. That means B-Movie Marathon at The Movie Whore’s house today.
Online Streaming Video
Just type free streaming movies into Google and then take your pick. There are a number of places to watch movies on line these days. Some legal, some not so legal. While I am a whore I am a law abiding whore for the most part. I do most my online viewing at Hulu.com. You might remember I wrote a review of Hulu a while back.
Where ever it is you choose to go to find your movies, know The Movie Whore has already been there to check things out. I really don’t have a favorite as all of these have their drawbacks but they are all also great places to discover movies you have never heard of.

How about the movie Soap Dish or Bushwacked? Those might be the worst all-time cinema ever.

At first I read “The Wanderers” which was the first book I ever read. So, I’m a fan of “The Wanderers” - not so much “The Warriors”
