More remakes for your pleasure/displeasure
Rants and Ramblings, The Whore's Lists May 12th, 2008So here is more remakes in the pipe and why I think they are a good or bad Idea. Most of these do not have much in the way of information on IMDb which is why there are no links for some of these in this post.
The Warriors: This is a classic flick. The original works because of the time it was made. Today it just does not work the same way. The only way to get it to work is to have it set in a different time and place. Whether it is the past or the future.
Meatballs: Do I really need to even address why this is a bad idea. This is classic flick that should never be touched.
Howard Stern’s Porky’s: See Meatballs. This one actually made me twitch for a good five minutes before I could see straight again.
1984: How do improve upon perfection? You don’t.
Footloose: I loved this flick as a kid. As an adult I would like to kick my younger self in the head. Might as well remake Dirty Dancing while you’re at it.
Logan’s Run: I like this one. This movie could use an update on special effects but for it to work you have to get good actors and pay attention to your story telling. I could see Ewan McGregor or Christian Bale taking over the Michael York role.
Death Wish: As if Stallone did not have enough franchises under his belt he decides to rip one off from Charles Bronson. Yes that is who is set to star in this. There is no possible way for this flick to be good. Just take a look at the last Rambo movie.
Akira: Live action Akira?
Really this is what you want to go with?
A lot of people cut their teeth in anime with this flick because it is so masterfully done. The problem with trying to take a story like this to the big screen is the risk that the CGI will overshadow any piece of story telling.
The Dirty Dozen: Lee Marvin. Do I really need to say anything else? I didn’t think so.
In case you think I need to say more then let me add Telly Savalas, Charles Bronson, George Kennedy, Ernest Borgnine and Donald Sutherland. You can’t match this cast. There is no ensemble cast that they can put together that will be equal to the original.
So there is only one from this list I like. The rest is just bad decision making. This why I am in such support of Independent film makers. Have fun kids and go watch some good movies.

Logan’s Run and The Warriors are two of my all time favorites. I’m open to the idea that they could end up awesome but it’s more likely that I’ll just end up getting my childhood raped.

I have no faith in The Warriors remake. But I own Logan’s Run and remember watching it the first time on a Saturday afternoon after cartoons when I was a kid.
it really is going to depend on who they get and how they work with the story.

I thought the WarGames and Lost Boys sequels were bad, but now we have another slew of remakes.
Argh.

I am right there with you with Akira.
I believe the words, “…you’re kidding right?” Came out of my mouth when I heard that.
TOTALLY think Logan’s Run might be really cool updated.
(I ALWAYS thought of this movie when I thought of Michael York.)
…and the thought of The Dirty Dozen is just ridiculous!

Pretty much as a rule I don’t care for remakes. I would rather see some one try something original and fail miserably than watch a well done remake.

Actually no I have not. I did however see the one they did on the USA network. It was interesting.
