It may not be “Good” but damn it’s entertaining
The Whore's Lists April 21st, 2008I really get tired of being told that movies have to be good to be taken seriously. The standard is one that is used by critics that went to film school and now being a critic is all they can do with it. I like good movies but I love entertaining movies. There are a lot of entertaining movies out there that critics just don’t like. I am not a critic, I am a movie whore. I have never watched a movie to see if it was good. I have always watched movies to be entertained and if it was good that was an added bonus. While it may be important to make good movies it is a matter of movie life or death for it to be entertaining. Here are some of my favorite movies that fall in this area.
The Rocky Horror Picture Show
One of my all time favorite movies and it is a horrible movie by any standard. Really when you look at it they made a new standard, if you make it bad in the right way people will love it.
Tank Girl
I love Lori Petty. Always have always will. This movie was in your face bad. They knew what they ere working with and they had a lot of fun with it. The one liners she cracks off make the movie, right along side with her general attitude. I don’t know too many actresses that could have pulled this part off and still make it entertaining and fun. That and where else are you going to see pimp daddy Ice-T as a half man half kangaroo?
The Adventures of Buckaroo Bonzai Across the 8th Dimension
Peter Weller John Lithgow, Clancy Brown, Jeff Goldblum and Ellen Arkin head up this adventure. Buckaroo is the product of a Japanese father and Caucasian mother who is a neurosurgeon, a physicist, a rock star and the guy the president calls for advice. It really is as bad as it sounds but it is a lot of fun.
Bubba Ho-tep
Bruce Campbell does the best Elvis impersonation I have ever seen. This is one of the most entertaining movies I have ever seen. Now I realize I pimp the hell out of Bruce’s movies but I can’t help it. Bruce Campbell is the man.
Dude Where’s my Car?
I hate to admit this but I actually laughed quite a bit throughout this horrendous movie. I remember the day I watched for the first time. Statty and I sat down to watch it and tried to hate it. But it was damn funny.
National Lampoons: Loaded Weapon 1
I hear the groans already. I actually still have a VHS copy of this floating around somewhere. You had Tim Curry dressed as a Wilderness Girl and the ultimate whore, William Shatner as the bad guy. The Shatman is another one of my heroes and not just because he was James T. Kirk (but it has a lot to with it.) but because the way the man does poke fun at himself and just has fun with everything he does.
Necessary Roughness
Bad, bad, bad, bad but entertaining. Watching a referee call a penalty naming martial arts moves is classic.
The Cannon Ball Run
One of the most entertaining movies of all time. From the all star cast with sarcasm oozing from nearly every scene to the out takes through the credits this is hands down one the worst but entertaining movies I can think of.
I am sure I will visit this subject again but can you think of some of your favorite movies that may not be good but damn are they entertaining. Tell us about with your comments.

Good movies list: My favorite from the list would have to be between Necessary Roughness and Dude Where’s My Car?
My favorite Mel Brooks movie is History of the World Part 1. Excellent film. As far as entertaining goes I liked Transformers a lot and it got blasted as being bad just because it wasn’t as good as the cartoon and made no sense in the Transformers Universe. I liked it, but then again I also like all 4 of the Die Hards.

Transformers was good but jury is still out on Die Hard 4.

If one is willing to see Die Hard, one should know what they are getting themselves into and that pretty much means ridiculous action, explosions, cheesy lines, and Bruce Willis going against all odds to take down terrorists. Moronically entertaining. How would you rate the original Die Hard?

The original is a classic because it was original and because Alan Fucking Rickman was the bad guy and he was the perfect bad guy.

I’ve always loved Ace Ventura 2: When Nature Calls. Its horrible. Absolutely horrible. But horrible enough to be funny as hell.
