A new found respect for Michael Bay
Rants and Ramblings April 15th, 2008I have given this man shit for years. A lot of us have. Typically you know what you are getting from a Michael Bay flick before you even know anything else. You know shit’s going to blow up. However he first started getting a little respect from me with Transformers. When I first heard the Bumblebee was going to be a Camaro I was pissed off. I grew up watching the cartoon and even owned the Bumblebee little yellow bug. Then you had the red one and that was Cliff Jumper. Kiss my ass , I know I am a geek. Anyway when Bay first brings Bumblebee into the story he parks next to a what…that’s right boys and girls a yellow VW. Really he is just saying “look how ridiculous this would have looked.”
I think he was right.
Next
Same movie. When the Autobots crash all over town and Ratchet crashes in the middle of town we get a scene of a fat kid with a camera running down the street and what does he scream?
“This is a thousand times better than Armageddon.”
Mr. Bay has no delusions about who he is.
Now as I was thinking about a little discussion I had over on Babeled, I complimented the guy I was disagreeing with on sticking to his guns in the face of my twisting his every argument around for my own twisted pleasure of making him squirm. Did I mention I am a dick. Anyway the guy earned my respect and it got me to thinking about the stand that Mr. Bay had taken with HD DVD. Now we all know he lost that one but he could have made a lot more money releasing Transformers on both formats. Granted he really doesn’t need the money but it shows a limit to his greed. Again I gain a little more respect for the man.
Now I had been making some points using Michael Bay as part of my argument for a couple articles I wrote for the Rusty Lime and got curious. So I went to his websites news blog and saw this.
For the man to do this short parody of himself is just awesome. It really shows he understands his place in Hollywood and knows his reputation and accepts it. I can respect that.

We all know railing on Michael Bay is very easy to do. I saw Transformers for the first time as soon as it came out on DVD. I was apprehensive at first, but to my surprise and joy the movie kicked total ass. The CGI was great, and the fighting was believable (at least as believable as automated alien robots can be). I am really looking forward to the next one.
Secondly, anyone who can make fun of themselves deserves some serious credit.

From what I understand the CGI team hated Bay. He kept insisting on kung fu robots. his determination paid off big time.

Not that I am speaking from any experience whatsoever, but it seems to me that if CGI is to be done right, the design team should hate the boss’ guts. Perfection and nothing less is what is needed for good CGI.

Tell that to the design team from I am Legend. Their CGI killed that movie for me.

I love that commercial. And can you blame him for making every movie in the same way? The guy found a method that makes his movies look good and makes him a lot of money.
Is he the one who made “The Island”?

Yes he is. I actually liked that one. Of course I am also Ewan McGregor fan.
